Brent crude oil prices have retreated to trade near $104 amid International Energy Agency (IEA) estimating a decline of 2.5 million barrels per day in the global oil demand by 2026. However, surging bond yields and rising expectation of interest rate hike by US Federal Reserve weighed on markets risk sentiments. Further, persistent capital outflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have made traders nervous. FIIs were the net sellers on Thursday’s session offloading securities worth Rs 438.24 crore.

On the global front, Asian equity markets were trading mostly in red as stronger than expected US producer price inflation strengthened the expectation of interest rate hike by US Federal Reserve. European equity markets were trading higher amid fall in crude oil prices and data indicating U.K. economy expanded at a faster pace in July, driven by services and industrial production.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74825.76, down by 76.83 points or 0.10% after trading in a range of 74160.16 and 74889.16. On the flip side, Tata Steel down by 1.77%, Bajaj Finance down by 1.52%, Mahindra & Mahindra down by 1.35%, Reliance Industries down by 1.23% and Power Grid Corporation down by 1.18% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal has said that India has charted course to emerge as a global hub for ship ownership, leasing and maritime finance. Addressing the India Ship Leasing and Financing Summit at the IFSC in GIFT City, the minister said the country was moving towards an integrated maritime ecosystem covering ship leasing, ownership, financing, insurance, brokering and related services.

Highlighting India's growing fleet footprint, Sonowal said India currently has 38 registered ship lessors, collectively leasing 43 vessels, taking total leasing capacity past 2.99 million DWT, of which 24 vessels now fly the Indian flag. He also noted that 41 domestic and international banks have set up in the IFSC, extending close to $60.1 million in funding to ship leasing entities, with DGMA's first regional office opening in GIFT City set to further strengthen this ecosystem for shipowners and operators. He outlined key reforms enabling Indian shipping to compete globally, including exemption from licensing requirements under the Coastal Shipping Act, 2025, for foreign vessels on charter, and permission for GIFT IFSC-based shipping companies to own foreign-flag vessels.

He cited India's emergence as the world's largest ship recycling nation, its share of global tonnage rising from 30.1 per cent in 2024 to 35.4 per cent in 2025. He further cited government's financial commitments to the sector, including the Rs 25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund expected to catalyse investments of up to Rs 1.5 lakh crore by 2030, and the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Scheme (SBFAS) 2.0, with a revised outlay of Rs 24,736 crore extended to 2036, both aimed at strengthening Indian shipyards and vessel ownership.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23428.40, down by 49.40 points or 0.21% after trading in a range of 23231.40 and 23448.10. Both indices remained under pressure, with the Nifty showing a slightly sharper decline than the Sensex, amid stronger selling across the broader set of Nifty constituents.

On the global front, all Asian markets were trading lower, even after producer prices in Japan were down 0.2 percent on month in August. That missed expectations for a flat reading following the upwardly revised 0.4 percent increase in July (originally 0.1 percent).

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74523.03, down by 379.56 points or 0.51% after trading in a range of 74160.16 and 74584.35. There were 11 stocks advancing against 19 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Telecom up by 0.98%, TECK up by 0.67%, IT up by 0.51% and Healthcare up by 0.05%, while Realty down by 3.46%, Metal down by 2.29%, Basic Materials down by 1.74%, Utilities down by 0.92% and Energy down by 0.90% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Tech Mahindra up by 2.20%, HCL Technologies up by 2.07%, Infosys up by 0.92%, Eternal up by 0.90% and Bharti Airtel up by 0.54%. On the flip side, Bajaj Finance down by 2.01%, Interglobe Aviation down by 1.93%, Tata Steel down by 1.88%, Reliance Industries down by 1.32% and Axis Bank down by 1.27% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that India aims to lead the world in the upcoming sixth-generation mobile technology and become a designer of global technology standards. Assuring India will lead the 6G race, he noted that the country had lagged the world on 4G but marched with the world on 5G and would lead the world on the sixth-generation mobile communication technology.

He highlighted the paradigm shift in India, from being a market for technology to becoming a technology maker. He added that India's 6G mission had already started and the Bharat 6G Alliance was working towards contributing to global standards. Underscoring India's progress in telecom connectivity, he said that the country now had 5G capability across 99.9% of its districts, covering 85% of the population, with more than 500,000 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and capital expenditure of over Rs 4.5 lakh crore. Also, the country had become the ‘cheapest data capital of the world’, with data costs falling from Rs 287 per gigabyte (GB) to Rs 9 per GB.

Emphasizing the significance of digital infrastructure, Scindia said that the country's digital infrastructure was driving the growth of fintech, with the mobile phone becoming ‘the new bank branch’ and the telecom network becoming ‘the new financial highway’. He added that the next leap in fintech would be from connecting people to platforms to connecting intelligence with opportunity, with convergence between 5G, BharatNet, Aadhaar, UPI, fintech and AI. Besides, he stressed the need for greater digital security, saying the shift should be from detecting fraud after it happens to preventing it by anticipating risks before money leaves an account.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23346.00, down by 131.80 points or 0.56% after trading in a range of 23231.40 and 23360.85.
